The origin of a creature we've all heard of — and a far more tender, tragic story than the movies ever let on.

My take

Mary Shelley’s story of Frankenstein and his monster became one of my favorite stories ever. It was a great pleasure to finally get into the origins of a creature we all have heard of, that became an inspiration for so many movies, art, as well as other stories and characters.

The monster’s story is so tragic.

It is true, we shall be monsters, cut off from all the world; but on that account we shall be more attached to one another.

I will be adding this book to my recommendations for the best classics for fall.

Spoilers ahead.

The ending hit harder than I expected.

Reveal the ending

Victor dies aboard Walton’s ship still chasing the creature, and the creature — finding its maker gone — vanishes into the Arctic to end its own life. Nobody wins; it’s grief all the way down.

You can also hide a single phrase inline, like the creature’s final fate being self-imposed exile and death — hover or tap to reveal.
